Obama Wins

The Crewe-Burkeville Journal did not publish a story on the results in the presidential race this week. The newspaper traditionally does not delay its weekly publication schedule because of elections. With a small staff, postponement causes a domino effect of problems.

The McCain-Obama election was truly historic. It arguably is one of the five or six most significant national elections in the country's history. The newspaper provided many items on the campaign leading into the vote on Nov. 4, 2008. There will be a report on how some Southside Virginians voted and commentary on the election in our next edition, which will be dated November 13 and is scheduled to be distributed and mailed on Wednesday, November 12.

It is clear that many people, of all races, feel good about Senator Obama's election. Yes, we heard a few racist remarks, but the country appears to sense that this election will go far to heal the more than 200 years of racial division in our country.

My family and I cast our votes for Senator Obama and Senator Joe Biden. We honor Senator John McCain, the GOP nominee. Personally, I wanted to vote for Senator McCain. I simply could not do so after he selected Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential nominee. I also feared that too much of the traditional Republican ideology that the government is more the problem than the solution would prevail under a McCain administration. It will take lots of government to fix the economic mess that the country finds itself in.

I was impressed by Mr. McCain's concession speech. In that address, he appeared to be the John McCain I believed I knew, not the John McCain who stumped for president.

As we wrote several time in The Journal, John McCain was the one great man in the presidential race. He remains that. I totally admire him.
